While highly derivative & certainly, very 'inspired', 'Babylon' still managesto not just engage but also impact you at some level. The writing has a very pleasant predictability to it, which, although, is very evident, still satiates you when it's done. The sets are vibrant, sometimes a bit more than required. The make-up is pretty well-done for the most part with it, sometimes, complimenting the actor's performance so well, that you might start to question what is actually captivating you, the acting or the look? Cinematography is good & at times, quite visceral. The music is amazingly poignant when need be & the rest is also beautifully composed & placed. Human management is pretty solid in this whole affair, from it's very first scene. Performances are also quite good, & while they don't stand out per say, they certainly help the film quite a bit. The direction by chazelle isn't groundbreaking or anything but is certainly engaging & to an extent, impacting. All in all, 'Babylon' is a genuinely good film which uses some standard ideas but does that in a pretty proficient way.
