MAN OF CINEMA
This movie reminded me a lot about Yasujirō Ozu's Tokyo Story.
Nothing is similar apart from the story focusing on family dynamics in a very modest and nuanced way. But still it has the vibes of the "Tokyo Story" film. "Still walking" title might be a metaphor to life itself, how it goes on generation after generation. We also see the scene where the grandpa, father, and young kid walking to the beach, all three generations together but will head to different directions with different ideologies from their fathers. Kore-eda show with subtle writing shows the burden of expectations from their parents on children, not treated/loved equally as Ryota's elder brother, that unimaginary wall between father and son, both with Ryota's father and with ryota and his son, you can clearly see the gap and lack of affection between them. The writing and performances are a big part of this film. The whole story takes place over 48 hours, and there are conversations one after another, yet you don't feel bored or anything, the writing is so good that you will feel you are part of that family and just sitting and listening to them. In asia, the family legacy, its values, being successful, having kids to carry the house name is very important. Kore-eda so brilliantly shows when you see the things with close lenses all these things look much more bleak, burdening and full of cracks.
