MAN OF CINEMA
Its not one of those feel good movies where characters go through things and
find a new reason for happiness in life.
Hard Truths is about that dull and depressing reality which Pancy Deacon is going through. And the character of pancy is also totally unlikeable, she is often angry, negative and rude people around her and even to strangers who are nice to her. She believes everyone hates her and feels that void of love. The film shows the mental health issue in a realistic way, how they care for that pain and emptiness inside, and it only hurts her but also people around her.
I loved the movie in bits and pieces, whenever Pancy is on screen it's a treat to watch, it's funny, sad, dull and bleak. But characters around her don't have that same effect, and the story somewhere feels incomplete or half baked. And it was very single character driven.
Marianne Jean-Baptiste as Pancy was one of the great performances I have seen in 2024. She really makes you feel irritated and annoyed with her character. She hit the tone so perfectly.
Just like any small indie film, Hard truth uses a minimalistic approach to shoot the film, it feels very simple, raw and realistic. Also gives the vibes of a documentary of an ordinary english woman who is unhappy to the core.
