The Red Sparrow
Produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar and Anubhav Sinha, Anek is a Ayushmann
Khurrana starrer directed by Anubhav Sinha. The film marks the debut of Andrea Kevichüsa in the role of Aido, a boxer who wants to achieve it big for India amidst all the issues in the states. Anek is a remarkable film in the sense that the subject matter of it is of significance to every Indian. There have been films in this category but the entire emphasis on the North East India makes it rare. There are many Indias in one India, we can either call it diversity or differences. But suffering because of the differences is discrimination which we apparently stand against. Aman (Ayushmann Khurrana), an undercover officer is on a mission to bring the rebel leader Tiger Sangha (Loitongbam Dorendra) to the negotiation table to form a peace treaty with a separatist group in the north east India. In the process of which, Aman comes across ingrained discrimination against the people of North Eastern states of India at different levels. There is Aido who wants to make her mark as an Indian. There is also a parallel take on shaping a boy into an extremist which may seem a little off track amidst the broader issues in question. Anek confronts you with the realities of discrimination and implication of isolating a particular population from ‘mainland’ India. And life in the tragedy of not feeling at home in a country which is your own. However, it may have tried to widen its horizon too much to play with the flow of the screenplay. Anek is a political thriller with some really impactful dialogues. The film is engaging and patriotic. What may look a little slow and stretched in the first half, picks up well for its audience in the second half. So, you may have to bear for a few minutes before it picks. It will not disappoint you on the topics that the film stresses on. And the characters look real and bothered with their quests. We love the casting and that is probably the reason that film leaves its mark. The portrayal of an Indian cop by Ayushmaan Khurrana is powerful, on point and relatable to the Indian audience. He wins over with his question, “Sirf Indian kaise hota hai aadmi?”

This, dealing with a rather rarely discussed subject, i wish had gotten a
better treatment in terms of depth & nuance than what we get here. Even though I'm sure Sinha's
