Ponniyin Selvan: Part Two
2023 Malayalam Movie
Drama Adventure Action
Mani Ratnam delivers a blockbuster again! This man truly challenges every youngfilmmaker to this date, even in his 60s! Book readers might not like this film because of a lot of creative liberty that have been taken to weave this canvas! Keeping aside the above said fact, this film is an interesting interpretation of Kalki's literary Magnum opus. The main challenge for any screenplay writer who wants to make a literary classic into a film is to chop off many portions of it. That too for a fat novel like Ponniyin Selvan, which is almost 2000 pages long, is definitely a humongous and dangerous task. Huge credits to writers Mani, Elango Kumaravel, and Jeyamohan for doing a fantastic job. Ponniyin Selvan part 1 actually prepares us for part 2. After understanding the narration style of PS1, which closely deals with the realistic and natural drama between the characters rather than larger than life , it makes PS2 even more special. The very first scene of the film plants the seed for the much later unraveling of things. There is no unnecessary exaggeration of any characters' actions or roles. Ravi Varman has done a fabulous job in capturing the entire film. His lensing and lighting make us feel that we are very close to the characters. That one confrontational scene of Aditha Karikalan(Vikram) and Nandhini (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) is gonna be a benchmark in his DOP career. Coming to the war sequence, one might expect the stereotypical bird's eye view. Here is where Ravi Varman differs. The shaky and chaotic close capture of the scenes gives a feeling that we are in the middle of the battlefield along with the Cholas. His name will be etched in history for his phenomenal work. A.R. Rahman is truly the GOAT. The background score in each and every scene elevates it to a whole other level. The Tiger hunt theme sung by Deepthi Suresh in the interval sequence was an unexpected atom bomb. Then comes the gut-wrenching Chinnanjiru Nilave sung by Khatija Rahman in the before mentioned confrontational scene that pierces through our hearts. Ilayoor soodar is visualized in an interesting way as an RR for an important scene of attempting to kill Sundara Chozar(Praksh Raj) where he meets Mandhakini @ Oomai Rani(Aishwarya Rai) as Arunmozhi(Jayam Ravi) fights the Pandya assassins. The sound design and mixing are way better than PS1. This combination of Mani Ratnam and A.R.Rahman is truly phenomenal, and we are fortunate to witness this in our times. Knowingly or unknowingly Baahubali has set a standard but it is unfair to even compare PS to that because that is more of a larger than life fictional drama and this PS is more of a real and historical drama! PS2 is a masterpiece in every aspect!

The finale stands independent and elaborates through drama, romance, conspiracies, family and war. A significant film in the history of Indian cinema indeed!
🔥
Way better than PS-1.
The first ten minutes of PS-2 make for the best opening I’ve seen in a long, long time. However, unlike it’s predecessor in which the film’s politics and action co-existed...

Everything was there. And nothing was there. Like this confusing statement the film went as it was like on steroids. The acting, the story, the music everything was on point....
There's this beautiful frame of the 3 siblings reuniting...that's the film for me: rare moments of vulnerability amidst the futility of war PS2 is full of such moments, making it...

So here's my theory about this film: Mani Ratnam was intrigued by around 10-15scenes in the story which he wanted to make the film for. And in those scenes (especially the climax...

Everything was perfect Aesthetic frames, awesome music, perfect drama...The way music elevated the scenes like karthi Trisha scenes and Vikram Aishwarya scenes are top notch
More coherent and familiarity makes it a better watch but you can feel thestory is compressed.
I felt Climax was incomplete....Iwas expecting that surprising twists in the movie which were in the books but a bit disappointed after watching the Climax..(personal opinion)
