Berlin is one of the most original, inventive and technically sound Hindi films
to have come out in a long time. Film start hoti hai 1993 ki Delhi mein, right around the same time when the Cold War came to an end. Berlin mein wall gir chuki thi par India mein Soviet ke sath relationship ko le kar ek ideolological wall abhi bhi bani hui thi.
Aise time mein film kahaani batati hai ek apparent assasination plan ki on the Russian President who is visiting India soon. We're introduced to Pushkin Verma, a sign language teacher at a local government school for deaf and mute students. One day he's suddenly called in by Intelligence Bureau Officer Jagdish Sondhi to help with the questioining of Ashok Kumar, a deaf and mute man jisko investigate kiya jaa raha hai for suspicions of being another country's secret agent. An interesting dynamic develops between these 3 charcters.
Yaha par film ki layers unpack honi shuru hoti hai, the plot takes some deliciously unexpected turns and the film compels you to reflect on themes of identity, marginalisation, abuse of power and most imprtantly patriotism.
This is a stunning, gloriously made film where every department brings their A game and each frame is crafted with meticulous details.
Film ka naam Berlin kyu hai aur kya hai yeh bhi ek intresting part hai. Everything from the films design and filmmaking choices take you back to classic spy films, thrillers, noirs and world wars films all at once.
