MAN OF CINEMA
A harrowing and sickening story of institutionalised racism, discrimination and
physical abuse in america in the 1960s.
Nickel boys tells a story of two young black boys in a reform academy called Nickel Academy, and their daily struggles and traumatic experiences and injustices in there and how they try to get out of it or fight it.
The Movie don't really just show things and tell a story, instead the director uses First person Approach/POV to provide that striking effect on us. And it works very brilliantly. When you see a story unfolding in pov manner it feels like you are actually witnessing the horrors with your own eyes and the effect is really surreal and immersive.
It makes viewers feel trapped inside the academy along with the character, which just elevates the level of emotions of suffering and survival. With the less of lights and artificial setups, this cinematography style works and provides a more soulful approach in understanding the character on a deeper level and provides unforgettable moments from the movie.
Although it is very nuanced and very detailed on how they captured every small thing with a POV approach, but sometimes this approach does get a disadvantage when the characters need to show physical contact and close contact, where this pov approach does not work on a dramatic level. But it is very experimental and unique.
Not just that, the film combines a unique blend of docu fiction. Along the movie we see historical and archive footage of the real academy which existed, and some other random things with it.
Despite that the movie does provoke the emotions of anger, shame and disappointment and make you sympathize with characters and real people who were victims of abusive authority and brutal discrimination. It confronts users to endure that harsh reality and that's why this style of cinematography really gives a new level of experiencing those emotions.
Director RaMell Ross really created something special and a heartbreaking story but also big up for cinematographer Jomo Fray who just gives a lifetime harrowing experience.
This is what cinema is for, just an absolutely brilliant piece of filmmaking.
