An exotic queer gaze of romance and longing loneliness.
Well i thought the Daniel Craig character would be a more uptight, grumpy queer person, but he turned out to be a chill junkie who was just desperate for a real connection in his lonely life. It's the other Character Eugene, who was more serious and mysterious. The film shows a very hot cold relationship between these two, something i have not seen in cinema in regards to queer relationships. I dont know if you can say this is a relationship or not, this was more of a wild adventure where Daniel's character was surely falling head over shoes for eugene, but eugene seems to be vague, at times uninterested. A very unsynchronised companionship. One question you can really ask after watching this film, was daniel craig a perfect pick for this queer character? Well for me it was a mixed bag, but i think director luca wanted to break that stereotype image of daniel we had in our mind all these years. And in a way we don't really get to know the backstory of daniel's character here, who knows maybe he is gay spy retired and finding love in an old mexican town. But What he has done here is something crazy, needs to be appreciated. This film has some really fantastic visual and aesthetic settings, feels enchanting, Nostalgic and dreamy. I also liked that bit where Daniel's inner soul reaches out of his body to show that affection which he was not able to. It was unique. For me the movie becomes very interesting when they enter the jungle. The surrealism and trance nature takes over the narrative and gives something so unique to witness. A heightened trance sense of alienated selves synchronises in one, which we missed in their connection all while. But where i felt a bit underwhelmed is the way his loneliness and pain was shown. I think it could have been more emotional. I loved the last scene though where he returns back to the same hotel room and lies down. There are many pieces of surrealism scattered around in the film, mainly showcasing how his own addiction, desires, and his loneliness is eating himself, like a snake eating its own tail. But all this surrealism takes away the humane emotions which is somewhere missing for me. But it's still a good complicated queer story.
