2024 Tamil Movie
Drama
Long Live Cinema
Kottukaani" is a film about a maternal uncle returning from abroad to marry his
niece, only to discover that she is adamantly in love with and determined to marry a man from an oppressed caste. The family, believing she is cursed and possessed by the devil, goes as far as attempting to have her exorcised.
The film explores society's absolute disregard for an individual's existence visually and excels in its use of dialogue to reveal information AKA exposition. In fact the masterful approach is something to learn from and highlights a unique strength of Tamil cinema.
In this film, there are moments where dialogue provides more to the narrative than visual exposition ever could, efficiently revealing everything that would otherwise take much longer to convey.
The dialogues serve as brilliant narrative tools, effortlessly triggering different story sections and making the narrative flow feel completely natural. Character tendencies are presented as existing rather than explicitly explored, hinting at the foundational rigidity preventing these characters from accepting the girl and her choices.

Terrific unique experience of a road movie of a family where the men and women
are scarily patriarchal, misogynistic. It’s from a truly original director laying a path for himself

Kottukkaali might be based on true incident film but couldn’t understand the
climax. 90+ mins is too much for this kinda story. Not in my good books.

I still think our audiences are yet to mature to witness these kinds of films (
Reminded me an interview of Satyajit Ray). A film which completely relies on exposition,
