MAN OF CINEMA
I just loved the dark bleak atmosphere it creates and usage of dark colors all
over. It just absorbs you completely and puts you in that small irish town, where Billy a coalman finds something wrongdoing happening with young girls in a local orphanage run by nuns. Based on the true story, the film doesn't dwell in too deeply about these wrongdoings, and i felt the Director took this approach deliberately, because everyone in town knew something was happening in that orphanage but remained to be tight lipped and carry on with their own lives and nobody dared to go against the church. Thats why film also acts like an character from the town and keeps everything under the wrap, we only see one girl from orphanage found in shed in the middle of night and something bad happened with her, that mystery never really unravels and neither Billy tries to uncover, but he rather decides to take that girl home , who is already a father of 4 girls and he has his own trauma of childhood being a orphan. You might feel a lack of intensity and drama, film also gets lost in between and some flashback scenes don't really add up to the story. Still the movie is carried by the brilliant performance of Cillian Murphy, but the supporting cast did not have much to offer in the script. It's a bleak sad story of people in that town who were breaking down on poverty all over and being exploited by the local church, just shows how much influence the church had on the people's lives and controlled them.

silence and subtleness always creates more impact and Cillian supports the mood
of the film with his nuanced performance!
