Thalavan is a Malayalam investigative thriller film directed by Jis Joy,starring Biju Menon and Asif Ali in lead roles. The story revolves around Karthik (Asif Ali), a newly appointed sub-inspector at the Chepannamthotta police station and CI Jayasankar (Biju Menon), the house officer of the station. Their initial friction increases when Jayasankar is involved in the murder of a gangster's wife and Karthik is in charge of the investigation. The narrative unfolds through flashbacks narrated by DySP Udayan (Dileesh Pothan), who initially led the investigation. The chemistry between Biju Menon and Asif Ali is a strong point, with both actors giving strong performances. Their dynamic, from enmity to friendship, is well executed. The first half of the film is engaging, with a simple narrative and intriguing red herrings that keep the audience hooked. The film does a commendable job of developing its characters, making the audience invested in their personal and professional conflicts. The second part presents many new suspects and situations, making the investigation complicated and difficult to follow. The climax feels overly dramatic and a bit disjointed, which detracts from the overall impact of the film. The pace of the film suffers in the second half, with too many subplots and characters introduced, which leads to a loss of narrative focus. Overall, Thalavan is an engaging film, mainly because of the good acting and the intriguing plot. Although it may not be a perfect thriller, it offers enough twists to keep the audience entertained. If you like police procedurals with complex character dynamics, Thalavan is worth watching.
