This is not the first time that the September 5 attacks are being represented
on screen. They have been the subject of many films and shows in the past, most notably the 2005 Steven Spielberg film Munich. But September 5 takes a particularly unique approach and recounts the events of that day from the perspective of the ABC Sports crew who were the primary channel to record and broadcast the footage of the attacks that day, despite being just a sports news unit.
The film is designed like a single-location thriller that takes us in the middle of the news broadcast room of ABC Sports and makes us a part of their debilitating day as they work their way through the broadcast of the attacks. We are never made witness to the attacks directly, but only through the eyes of the news crew in the form of audio and visual footage. This approach makes the viewing experience even more nerve wracking & evokes a sense of dread & helplessness within you which is indicative of the emotional turmoil of the crew.
The film is distinct in its intent & structure, as its attempt is not to make any political or ideological statements about the groups involved in the attacks, but to make observations about the media and their role during high-pressure world events. The film sheds light on the central motivation of professionals in the media which is hinged on getting views and numbers even in the most tragic of circumstances, and the extents to which they would go to portray certain narratives and emotions.
The film uses real archival footage by ABC which heightens the viewing experience and it keeps on reminding you of the realness of the events being shown lest you should mistake it for something that's only been dramatised for fiction. The film was nominated for a Best Original Screenplay Oscar this year, and in my opinion is one of the best films of 2024.
