MAN OF CINEMA
It's hard enough to live as queer couple, but after living for over 30 years
together and if one of the partners suddenly passes away, then the other partner's life surely won't be a smooth ride. That's what we see here when Angie's partner Pat passes away, suddenly she becomes a stranger in her own life who has not been valued and recognised anymore. A family from pat's side starts to isolate her and push her away to snatch her own apartment in which she lived for 30 years. She felt so hopeless and alone. Ray Yeung cleverly talks about the topic of Queer, Gay rights & laws, hypocrisy of people, greed, all these through a more relevant genre of family drama. There is almost no music and only natural sounds of life can be heard, it’s the pain of the grieving heart that makes the most loud sound in all that quietness. Even though its intimate family drama, there are hardly any dramatic scenes which will overwhelm you, the film has a subtle and mellow approach to the story. It is one of those film pieces that makes you listen carefully and observe character behaviours. I also loved the colors they used in cinematography, earthly colors of brown, green, yellow, it kind of shows different seasons too in the background as the movie moves along. We also see large landscapes of hong kong, a place where once she felt like home, now it feels strange and far to reach. Its a compassionate film about cruel realities, that can turn your loved ones into complete strangers.
