There is a weird obsession in all ofus about foreign languages, especially languages like french, which we think is so exotic, high class and artistic and we if any speaks that kind of language we are immediately attracted to them in some way and crave to learn that language, but we do not think who that person is, where is she come from, what is she doing here and what are her needs. One such mystery french lady is Iris who is in south korea no one knows why, She teaches French to a couple of her students, but she never had teaching experience and she is doing this try out whether she can teach them in her own unique way and she is very honest about it. But apart from this she is a very mysterious person who wanders on streets, lies on rocks, reads scriptures which she doesn't understand, and addicted to Makgeolli drink which gives her some kind of comfort in this bizarre life she is living in. It is a character study of a person who is completely opposite from the usual traveller/tourist we see. Director Hong Sang-soo uses an offbeat approach in making this film, with minimal or no effects or editing, often feels like home video, but that's the style of filmmaking he is famous for, very minimalistic, less dramatic and emotions and more emphasized on characters and dialogues. The conversations are the heart of his movies. It is really hard to understand the purpose of the film, but i feel there is none, It's just the character study of an unusual traveller who landed in the place where she knows nothing, yet trying to find some meaning and comfort in anything she sees or does.
