If you’re familiar with Hayao miyazaki’s filmography and especially his last
film ‘Boy and the heron’ then you would love this documentary. This documents his struggle to make this film for 7 yrs amidst him losing his mentor , losing his peers and also his constant throwback to mortality . There were several moments that were so moving cos he badly wants to complete this film but then is struggling so much . The documentary superimposes real life characters with movie sequences beautifully. Also depicts his relationship with children , constantly pulling his co- workers legs especially producer Honda , his unending obsession for perfection and in the end just quietly sitting on his porch thinking what he would do next . He says he has retired but the end shows how he needs to constantly work to keep himself sane so you can never rule out though he’s in the wrong side of 80s. If you love his work , this feels like sitting with him in the same room and watching his histrionics.. it’s funny , it’s moving , it’s sad ..
