MAN OF CINEMA
" The Evil Comes From Within or From Beyond?"
Well now that i have all three
iterations of this legendary tale, i can surely tell Robert eggers delivered a near perfect homage to this beautiful yet haunted tale of centuries-old.
This has the capacity to beat Werner Herzog's version in many ways, He masterfully portrayed the plague in a real authentic way using physical effects. And no one could do better than him. I think Robert knew that, that's why he decided to focus on other elements of the tale. Ellen's Melancholy, her trauma and shame, A whole different portrayal of Orlok, he presented a beast that was really meant to be feared.
That scene where orlok is on top of Thomas and suck the blood, that sound of gulping blood itself is terrifying, let alone the image. There are so many such moments in this film which really enriches these characters and we really see them with close lenses, in all their ugliness and beauty.
There are hardly any wide shots or long shots, most of the shots are close up on the characters, surrounded by darkness or emptiness, leaving that feel that Nosferatu is lingering and breathing behind their neck. And those shots really work well.
This movie also stands apart from the other two main versions, is because of its gore, unhinged, inhesitated , naked treatment that eggers gave here. Its just makes the horror elements hit really hard. It kind of becomes a psychological horror towards the end.
Even though the story is the same as all versions, Eggers's version will make you feel this is set in a different parallel of that world with the use of brilliant cinematography and different perspectives, it really stands out among the three. Of course this would not have been possible in the older era when herzog made it, but credit goes to robert to not showcase same thing inch by inch, he does puts his own vision and perspective in this. This is one of the best horror movies i have seen in recent years.
