What a beautiful and devastating fable is this.
I watched it with no idea about the plot and the film just crawled deeper inside my heart and unknowingly you will start loviy it. It's a modern fairy tale where the ending is more cruel than the beginning. Director Alice so brilliantly showcases slavery and exploitation in modern times, the disparity between classes and privilege, even when these slaves reinstate into the modern world they are still homeless and dependent on stealing and conning people. It shows even if slavery might be removed in the modern times, but the people are equally miserable, struggling and exploited by society as same as slaves. In between all this rich, poor, hunger, violence, greed themes, Alice planted a character called Lazzarro who comes across as an innocent, naive, gentle and kind soul who never says NO to anything and always helps who calls his name. Like a saint/angel in a fairy tale who has no motives, no desires but yet get misunderstood by the people around him and treats him like trash. In symbolic way director tells even if god comes down to earth to help people who are in misery, those people will prefer to exploit him, torture him for their own benefits, resent it, how they distrust it, rather than see the kindness and love he brought with him. I may not be making much sense through my words, but this is one of those beautiful stories which will just make you weep in silent and tells lot about fucked up society and importantly humans, who are really hopeless beings and nobody can help them. The film requires patient viewing in the beginning, but once you are in, it will make you fall in love with Lazzarro. Its a modern contemporary that was so well done which shows two different worlds which see different in many ways, but they all are same pathetic human beings.
