The commandant of Auschwitz and his wife strive to build a dream life for their family in a house next to the camp.

I had the opportunity to watch this today at a private viewing & highly
recommend it when you get a chance to see it. Probably will win some academy awards too and it deserves it 💯! This is one of the most impactful movies of the past few years for me & in the top 3, amongst the holocaust movies I have seen so far. Almost immersive, if not for 2D. I never thought Schindlers List would be look ‘filmy’ but boy this hit me harder than SL or any other movie based on this event. The film delves into the lives of Auschwitz commandant Höss & his wife as they “attempt” to create an idyllic existence for their family in a residence adjacent to the concentration camp where millions are turned to ashes by the hour. **The above is a striking scene from the film, the Nazi commandant enjoys a serene fishing moment, only to be abruptly confronted by ashes from the camp drifting over him.**The realization dawns on him with revulsion, a moment captured brilliantly on the big screen as the ashes slowly envelop his surroundings. The Holocaust transcends narratives of hope or survival…it represents mass murder on an unprecedented scale & the flawed humanity that facilitated & carried out such atrocities. In this film we are given a glimpse into the domestic lives of the Nazi family involved & where the sheer ordinariness of their existence is profoundly disturbing. This aspect is woven into the narrative..underscoring that the Holocaust’s true horror lies not in its exceptions but in its normalization within society, adding depth to the film’s exploration of complacency, indifference & the chilling normalcy of evil. its deliberate pacing may test the patience of some audience but I really _really_ loved the story narrative, performances, haunting BGM, color grading - the works! And yes !! it’s A24 💖

I had a hard time watching this film.
I couldn't connect with the narrative or the characters at any point. After 1 hour and 44 minutes, I felt like the film was empty for me.
