Tessa Thompson and Ruth Negga who star as Two black women who were friends in
the past now living in the 1920s new york meet each other and discover the truth that could destroy one's life. Ruth is passed as white despite being negro to avoid racial discrimination and social privileges, this was common practise in that time among mix colored folks. And this bothers Tessa's character a lot as Ruth intervenes in her life more n more. The relationship between these two women becomes more complicated. Irene(Tessa Thompson) becomes envious of Clare's(Ruth Negga) social status and her charm, and even jealous of her which pushes irene to the edge in the climax. On the other hand Clare cares about and admires Irene, she misses her old life and being true to herself and her race, but now all this has created a difference between them based around her acquired and perceived privilege. The long looks between them say a lot. Some have read it as an attraction. It's a very unusual story of two women, both on the opposite spectrum despite born same race which was oppressed. Interesting watch.
