MAN OF CINEMA
The uncontrollable patterns of our lives, that keeps pulling us back into
spiral even though you try to get out of it, only to end up being in a cycle of self destruction that pushes you into dark oblivion. Urchin in a very raw , absurd, and surreal way tells a story of a homeless man who tries to lead a new honest life after a dark past, but the situations and everyday struggle of handling self with emotions, addiction and mentally is challenging, its never easy and always push you into spiral where you end up starting from scratch all again, eventually losing all hope and desires and questions why do even live. Actor turned debutant director Harris Dickinson so cleverly narrates a brutal story out of many real examples, he does not fall for simple cliches and tropes to tell a sweet redemption story. He does go deep into the life of homeless people, trying to make you understand why most end up back on streets even when people around them try to give them a second chance at life. It's like they don't even want to help themselves to lead a better life. He shows how life can be a vicious cycle of self destruction just like a snake eating its own tail. Dickinson deserves all the praise, not only for picking up a delicate story and vulnerable character but also experiments with surrealism and dream sequences. That ending just blew my mind. There can be multiple conclusions about it, but the way he drowns in that dark oblivion is just scary and comforting both at the same time. I am really hyped to see his future work now as a director. He really should have taken easy routes like many debut directors do, but he chose a story over himself. I love that. There is one more thing which i really loved is how there are three different dance sequences , after which his life takes a different turn. The first one was a more happy dance with friends on karaoke night, he was happy with his new job and his life looked like it was becoming stable. The second during the relapse, fueled by ketamine, this is a stage where he is helpless and clueless. and the third is a solitary , drunken, and agonizing dance before spiralling into oblivion. When you notice these small things in the film, it just increases the level of experience for you as a viewer. It clearly shows Dickinson as director has unique vision and understanding of things on a deeper level. This film kind of reminded me of Agnes Varda's vagabond, just like this that film also questions social realism, homelessness, value of money, existential crisis, spiralling into chaos by choice. And the ending of both films are really heartbreaking.
