Wake-Up Dead Man clearly carries the familiar undertone of the Knives Out
“whodunit” franchise, and to its credit, the mystery itself remains engaging. The film keeps you guessing, constantly tangling your thoughts with fresh twists and misdirections. Even for viewers who haven’t seen the first two installments, it works well enough as a standalone mystery, offering intrigue and momentum throughout.
That said, when compared to its predecessors, the writing feels noticeably weaker. Several plot choices stretch believability to the breaking point. The most glaring example is the idea of a prime suspect actively investigating the crime alongside a detective, an arrangement so absurd it pulls you straight out of the story. It also raises the question: where exactly are the police, and why do they seem so conveniently absent?
Visually and tonally, the film leans into excess. Mila Kunis appears buried under heavy makeup, which becomes distracting rather than transformative. The dialogue often veers into childish or overly theatrical territory, making scenes feel outlandish and artificial. At times, it feels less like a grounded film and more like watching a stage play unfold, complete with exaggerated performances.
While Wake-Up Dead Man is entertaining and serviceable as a mystery, its logical loopholes and theatrical execution prevent it from reaching the sharp brilliance of the earlier films.

Good fun.
Made me rewatch the first knives out also again because of classic whodunnit gap in market otherwise.

A gripping detective drama more than a mystery, the film becomes a quiet
meditation on guilt, pain, and what it truly means to be compassion. A thoughtful, powerful watch.
