MAN OF CINEMA
Even though Hong sang soo's most movies feel like drawn out of reality or from
our lives, this one feels more personal for the director himself.
He explores the struggle of an artist, not from a career or creative point of view, but on more personal terms, like relationships, anger, frustration and disappointment.
Director with his classic trademark setup interactions and conversations as they drink, walk and talk, in these conversations we get to know each character deeply, especially the poet who came to meet his girlfriend's parents, we slowly see on surface he looks happy or contained, but his real nature comes out and many layers open up over the dining table.
Many directors would have taken the dining sequence into a more dramatic or crazy end or consequences, but hong sang so just treated it as a normal conversation over the dinner table. And that's his magic, keeping things simple, effective and realistic.
The idea is not to show the true nature of the poet, but hong wanted to show "The misunderstood artist", one frustrated moment out of heat and under influence of alcohol, people who appreciate him start to devalue and look down.
It is a great character study of an artist, who is struggling with his personal life which is an effect of his own professional life.
