Who is Wicker? The hideous looking creature created out of nothing, who is more human than anyone with full of empathy, kindness and love, OR The people who look like beautiful humans but carry ugliness, Jealousy, greed and hatred deep inside them for one another. The film with its quirky, wicked and quite ridiculous humour and satire tells a tale of the self destructive nature of humans when they feel threatened by someone who is far superior to them, and how their true dark desires come out in the form of self destruction. The magic of Wicker lies in its substance and characters rather than its social commentary, or morality messaging. Wicker is everything that you have watched, its the "Beauty and the beast", its a "Frankenstein", hell its even a "Pinnochio", for adults, but it's also a lot more than that. Wicker with its fascinating village and whacky characters, tells a sincere and honest story where there is a place for emotions, grief, lust, jealousy and everything that humans desire. It is bold, weird and deeply human. Through its satire i loved how it critiques the institution of marriage, patriarchy, the gender roles, feeling of loneliness, desires and companionship. We see a woman craving for magical love fantasy, and thinks he will cure her distress and humiliation, without understanding that cause stems from the society who never wanted to see her happy and outcasted her, because she was different from them. Coleman, Skarsgård and dinklage are absolute pillars of the movie, what a performance from the trio. Especially Olivia Coleman, her performance will remind you of her role in "The Favourite" this one is even more fascinating, heartbreaking and equally hilarious. Wicker at its core is a love story that tells you to love yourself and learn to accept, then love the people around you and treat them with kindness. And most importantly it shows that relationships of any kind stand on trust and respect and nothing else.
