Three Of Us is a film about the complicated relationship we share with memory.How would it feel to confront your past trauma if you're losing your memory? How does the loss of memory affect your association with your trauma? The kind of trauma that changed you into the person you are today, but what if you can't even remember it anymore? Does it still haunt you? Are you still the same person if your memory isn't a part of you anymore? Three Of Us tries to confront these very uncomfortable questions with utmost compassion, sensitivity & nuance. Following a woman who has been recently diagnosed with dementia, Three Of Us takes us on her journey back to a town where she spent 3 years of her childhood, as she has a sudden longing to revisit the place along with her husband. As she tries to piece together fragments of a life long gone by, we are made spectators to a beautifully complex study of romance, friendships, memory, spaces, trauma & time. Director Avinash Arun has shot the film himself, capturing the gorgeous landscapes of Vengurla with immense passion & unbelievable tenderness. He borrows the calm & serenity from the town & infuses them into his characters. There is some gut wrenchingly evocative poetry by Varun Grover & hauntingly beautiful music by Alokananda Dasgupta that shadows the whole film, piercing through your soul & staying with you for weeks after the film. But the writing of the film by Arpita Chatterjee, Omkar Barve & Avinash is itself poetic, distilled with the kind of lyricism that we're used to discovering in the films of Gulzar & Vishal Bhardwaj. And lastly, the film is headlined by some extraordinary actors who all give some of their best performances. It's the kind of acting that really makes you realise how great actor-director pairs can elevate a film to another level. Three Of Us is a film about memory, so it makes sense that it's the kind of film that's impossible to forget. I certainly haven't been able to, & I hope you don't either.
