Synopsis
The youngest son in a traditional Pakistani family takes a job as a backup dancer in a Bollywood-style burlesque and quickly becomes infatuated with the strong-willed trans woman who runs the show.

Available to rent now on Prime Video, Joyland kahaani hai ek family, aur ek dance performer ki, their lives tragically entwined thanks to the patriarchal laws governing all of humanity. Beech mein hai Haider, joh harr roz koshish karta dikhta hai kabhi ek marriage of equals maintain rakhne ki, kabhi trans dancer Biba se insaaniyat ke naate nibhaane ki, kabhi what men should and shouldn’t do ke taboos hataane ki, par harr attempt mein finds himself alone, pushing again walls of tradition, jammed stiff due to lack of resistence. Watch Joyland for its commentary on trans rights, the travails of living in joint families, but mostly for it study of repression. Why must Biba be loud and rude to assert her right to live, as Haider’s wife Mumtaz‘s silence slowly dissolves her from the inside out. Yeh film dekh kar realise hoga, just how loudly men are allowed to assert their dominance, fearless in nightclubs, unafraid in the streets. Side note - “Main mangaya tera mashwara?” is my current fav retort to all unsolicited advice IRL, thankyou Alina Khan!
I started this movie with zero expectations and man this movie surprised me.A must watch for those who won't mind unconventional movies.
