Synopsis
The youngest son in a traditional Pakistani family takes a job as a backup dancer in a Bollywood-style burlesque and quickly becomes infatuated with the strong-willed trans woman who runs the show.

Although a decent number of films that tell empathetic tales of queer love havebeen making a mark every now and then, it must be noted that most of these films are European or American. Yes, we did have Park Chan-wook's The Handmaiden and Wong Kar-wai's Happy Together from a small number of films, but still it's not an overwhelming number. And when it comes to the Indian subcontinent and it's neighbouring Pakistan, both of which share a common history, languages, cuisines, tastes and traditions, except the recent film Badhaai Do, none comes to mind from the same genre. That is where JOYLAND comes in, Pakistan's official entry to the 2023 Oscars and the winner of the Jury Prize and Queer Palm at Cannes 2022. JOYLAND is rich with themes and parallel stories of various characters, with a love affair between Haider, an under confident man on first impression and Biba, a transgender woman, as its central story. Haider's wife, Mumtaz sees her freedom chipping away as an unplanned pregnancy looms and a patriarchal father-in-law demands she quit her job to take better care of things at home. Haider is bullied for his relationship with Biba and Biba is harassed by work, colleagues and the society at large. It would be difficult to pick out moments that actually make you feel joy, from JOYLAND. But JOYLAND is more than just an essential film. It's a beautiful film. Saim Sadiq's directorial work is top-notch and reflects a certain quality. The film is meant to be watched at least twice for it reflects the very society we live in and shows us what's wrong and the damage, often irreparable, it causes.
I started this movie with zero expectations and man this movie surprised me.A must watch for those who won't mind unconventional movies.
